Police were called to the crash on State Highway 1 at 11.15am and both fire and ambulance services were also called.
A police spokeswoman said the serious crash unit was investigating.
A St John spokesman said two people were injured and were taken to Dunedin Hospital.
One person was in a critical condition while the other had minor injuries, the spokesman said.
The Northern Motorway was closed in both directions for about two hours. R
