Allied Press, publisher of the Otago Daily Times, has hit a veritable gold mine at the recent 2024 Pride in Print Awards.

The publisher won the overall Web Offset Coldset Process category of the awards with its publication of Essence (October 2023 edition) — a magazine showcasing North and South Canterbury’s new businesses, unique homes, gardens, innovative entrepreneurs and intriguing personalities.

The judges said it was a "crisp, clean and great-looking publication".

"This well-crafted job has excelled in communicating attractive and engaging content to consumers, while delivering a key income stream for the newsprint industry."

Allied Press also won five gold medals in the Publications category with publications of the Otago Daily Times (January 11, 2023), Otago Daily Times (November 30, 2023), Grand Business South Awards finalists programme, Essence magazine (October 2023), and My Mate John’s Furniture Warehouse Sleeptopia advertisement.

The company also won highly commended awards for its publications of Fulton Hogan — Celebrating 90 Years, and Selwyn Gardening Guide (Spring 2023).

Allied Press print supervisor Justin Aitken said the printing team were rapt with the prestigious national awards.

"It’s special to win it.

"We’re humbled to have won it — we were up against stiff competition.

"It’s up there with some of the highlights of my career in the print industry."

Judging was based on technical excellence in all facets of the production process, typography and good design, allowing specialists to make judgements based on the potential and the limits of processes, and the materials and equipment used.

Mr Aitken said 15,500 copies of Essence were published in October 2023, on 70gsm paper stitched and trimmed on a Goss Universal 70 web offset press.

The press is able to run varying widths and types of paper, and consists of five towers, seven reel stands and two folders supplying a mail room.

The Pride In Print Awards were established in 1993 with the goal of promoting excellence in print in New Zealand, and have been a pinnacle of recognition year after year for the best in visual print communication products.
