The annual awards recognise the best of New Zealand's news media across all platforms.
The ODT is a finalist in the metropolitan newspaper of the year category.
It is also a finalist in the best editorial campaign or project category for the Our Health is Priceless campaign to hold the government to account over cuts to the new Dunedin hospital.
Illustrations editor Stephen Jaquiery is a finalist in two categories: best photography — news and best photo story. Both entries feature his dramatic shots of the foundering of fishing trawler Tamahine and rescue of its crew at Taiaroa Head in June.
Graphic artist Austin Milne is a finalist in the cartoonist/animator of the year category and reporter Matthew Littlewood is a finalist in the local journalist of the year category.
Having finalists in six categories is a fantastic achievement and recognises the high standard of journalism that we achieved in 2024, and which continues.
In particular we are pleased to be recognised for our hospital campaign, which was a real team effort — from the exclusive stories to the graphics, photography, video and sub-editing work that went into it.
The awards ceremony will be held in Auckland on May 16.
