Protective fencing project begins soon

Work is expected to start soon on protective fencing for some of the native plants on the Harbour Cone block owned by the Dunedin City Council.

The Otago Peninsula Trust has been granted $47,850 from the Department of Conservation Community Conservation Fund to be spent over two years, for fencing bush areas, native planting, and the poisoning of weeds.

Trust general manager Robyn McDonald said the fencing would be the first of the work, followed by planting of about $2500 worth of trees.

The trust was lucky to have received the funding, as it had been advised the fund had now been cut.

The work would be carried out by a combination of contractors and voluntary groups.

Harbour Cone steering group chairman Cr Dave Cull said the involvement of the trust in Harbour Cone illustrated the "real co-operative support" the group was getting from interested groups.

While up until now there had not been a huge amount of work to be done, a variety of people were keen to offer their services.
