Dunedin and Clutha have a severe weather watch in place as MetService predicts heavy snow for parts of the lower South Island tomorrow.

Tonight the weather is set to turn, MetService has predicted a cold southeast flow would develop over the South Island while a front moves north.

Southland and Otago should expect snow to lower overnight to 200 metres, while snow showers were expected to affect parts of Dunedin and the Clutha District.

Heavy snow as low as 100m could be expected in some of these areas and accumulation of 10-15cm of snow could be experienced above 200m from tomorrow morning to the early afternoon.

"Where the heavy snow occurs, it will affect road transport, livestock and power lines."

MetService expects snow to fall and affect several roads throughout the Otago and Southland regions late tonight and tomorrow.
