Six arrested after Dunedin assaults

Six Dunedin gang members and associates have been arrested following two central city assaults last month.

Detective Sergeant Nik Leigh said five members and one associate of the Dunedin chapter Mangu Kaha Black Power gang had been arrested and charged following the assaults.

The first occurred early on June 25 in High St, near the Dunedin casino, and involved an altercation between two groups.

The second happened about 9.30am on June 28 in Stafford Street - where up to six members of the gang attacked two men on the street.

Both incidents resulted in people requiring medical attention.

The charges  faced by the gang members - five men and one woman - included wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault with intent to injure and assault with a weapon, Det Sgt Leigh said.

"Police do not tolerate any violence being committed in the community and will put every resource available into investigating these incidents in order to hold those responsible to account," he said.

"We received a huge amount of support from members of the community during this investigation, which is great and indicates to me that they will not accept such violence and are committed to having a role in keeping our streets and community safe."
