A legally blind South Dunedin pensioner allegedly attacked his neighbour with a crowbar during a 3am dispute over noisy renovations.

Pottki Tangimetua, 66, appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on a charge of injuring with reckless disregard.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to a South Dunedin address at 3am yesterday after a disagreement between neighbours escalated to a man being hit twice by a crowbar.

The resident of the home, a 32-year-old man, was up early listening to loud music and painting his kitchen when Tangimetua came over with a crowbar.

The loud music had angered Tangimetua, and he went over to confront his neighbour.

An argument ensued and then escalated before Tangimetua allegedly hit the 32-year-old with a crowbar twice.

Police arrived and arrested Tangimetua, who was charged with injuring with intent to injure.

Judge Michael Turner granted Tangimetua bail on conditions he live at a Dunedin address, not associate with the complainant, not go within 100m of his neighbour’s address and not be violent or threaten violence.

The duty lawyer explained the defendant was legally blind.

He did not enter a plea to the charge.

The court heard he would not be living in the same neighbourhood as the complainant while on bail.

He is expected to reappear next month.
