Police pepper-spray dogs fighting in Princes St

Dunedin police were forced to use pepper spray against two dogs fighting in the middle of Princes St yesterday morning.

The pit bull-type dogs stopped traffic as they attacked one another outside the former Lone Star Cafe and Bar building at 417 Princes St about 8.30am.

Acting Senior Sergeant Damion Rangitutia said a police officer noticed the dogs fighting on the footpath as he drove along Princes St, so he turned around to investigate.

''By that time, the dogs had moved into the middle of the road,'' he said.

The officer pepper-sprayed both dogs, which were then restrained by their owners.

Acting Snr Sgt Rangitutia said the owners appeared to know one another, but had been walking their dogs separately.

Neither was arrested in relation to the incident.
