Pensioner warned after driveway dispute

A pensioner has been warned for dousing his neighbour with a garden hose after tempers flared over a central Dunedin driveway.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said police were called to a ''high-pressure fluid situation'' yesterday morning after reports of a 78-year-old man turning his hose on a neighbour.

The men's York Pl properties share a driveway, which has become a point of consternation.

''[The 78-year-old] built a barrier to stop his neighbour accessing his [the neighbour's] property and his neighbour pulled it down,'' Snr Sgt Benn said.

The dispute came to a head when the pensioner used his hose to douse his neighbour about 10am yesterday, and police were called.

''We have referred them back to the civil courts to sort out their differences,'' Snr Sgt Benn said.

''We have advised him the high-pressure fluid situation shouldn't occur.''

If called to a similar incident in future, police might consider laying assault charges, he said.

The neighbour was uninjured but received ''a good soaking''.
