A little blue penguin's inner-city escapades ended with it being rescued from a central Dunedin street.
Department of Conservation biodiversity manager Jim Fyfe said the bird was found by a member of the public on Bond St this morning and released back into Otago Harbour in a healthy condition.
It was unheard of for a penguin to venture so far into the city.
A police spokeswoman earlier said they received a call about 1.30am after the animal was spotted in Market Reserve, near the Oval.
A unit was dispatched, but was unable to locate the bird.
