A Chinese tourist has been charged over a Central Otago crash on New Year's Day in which a vehicle rolled off the road into a paddock.

Du Jian (31) appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Wednesday charged with careless driving causing injury, following the incident on State Highway 8.

Police say Jian was driving near Bendigo, between Tarras and Cromwell, when he lost control of the Toyota Rav4.

The vehicle flipped several times before coming to a stop on its side, on a wire fence.

Some of the occupants were able to free themselves and helped the others out of the wreck.

One passenger was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in a ''moderate'' condition, while the three others in the vehicle were taken to Cromwell Medical Centre by ambulance.

Jian had to reschedule his travel plans because victim Ming Cao was still in hospital, and he was remanded on bail until January 17.

He was ordered to surrender his passport.

Sergeant Bruce Terry, of Cromwell, said it appeared the driver had tried to correct the vehicle after it drifted slightly left, off the road, and then lost control.

He praised the ''fantastic'' actions of the members of the public who stopped to help the injured tourists before emergency services arrived.
