Councillors agreed to retain the present structure while considering voting systems for the 2022 local body elections during its full council meeting yesterday.
However, it intends to hold a public poll during that election to consider the voting method for the following election in 2025.
Councillors were more than happy to do so.
Deputy chairman Michael Laws said he would like to see the council ask the question and receive public feedback on what voting method the public would prefer.
While Cr Bryan Scott said he was not bothered about which voting system was used, he hoped it would be consistent with city and district councils, referring to the voting card as a "dog’s breakfast".
His fellow councillors were not quite so confident that would happen.
Cr Hilary Calvert liked the idea of keeping the current system and holding a poll during the 2022 election, something that both Cr Marian Hobbs and Cr Laws agreed on, she said.
Cr Laws moved the motion and it was seconded by Cr Hobbs.
A public notice advising electors of their right to demand a poll on the voting system for both the 2022 and 2025 election must be made by the council prior to September 19.
The demand has to be signed by at least 5% of the electors enrolled to vote at the previous election.
