One person had to be cut from a car after it left the road at a major Dunedin intersection and ended up in a neighbouring street.

A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said the four occupants were taken to Dunedin Hospital — one in a serious condition and the rest in moderate condition.

Emergency services responded to the single car crash near the intersection of Taieri Rd, Kaikorai Valley Rd and Stuart St about 2.40am yesterday.

The car appeared to have left the road at high speed and travelled down a bank before hitting a tree and stopping in Walton St.

The driver had to be cut out of the car.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Simon Lyford said two fire appliances initially responded, and a third was called to help free the driver.

Two ambulances and a manager vehicle were sent to the scene.

Police could not confirm if alcohol was a factor, and a spokesman said inquiries into the cause were ongoing.
