Athletes were feeling autumn as soon as they dived into Otago Harbour for the annual Otago Triathlon Championships yesterday.

It may have been sunny, with blue skies — perfect conditions for a sporting event — but the water was still pretty chilly.

Event organiser and Dunedin Triathlon and Multisport Club president Tamsyn Hayes said only 28 athletes competed in the 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run this year, but organisers were pleased with the turnout.

"Numbers were down this year because of Covid-19. It was only about a third of what we usually have. Some categories only had one person in them.

"I think we’ve had a few people drop out just in the last week — people didn’t enter if they had been sick or self-isolating.

"A lot of races have been cancelled over the past 12 months, both locally and further abroad.

"So we were pleased we could still hold the event."
