Sleeping Beauty will face some new challenges this weekend.

Rather than evil witches and curses, maintaining composure on the ice at Dunedin Ice Stadium could be her biggest concern.

Sleeping Beauty on Ice is the Dunedin Ice Skating Club's fifth show in the stadium, and organiser Desley Anthony says it will be the best yet.

Competitive and recreational skaters, aged between 4 and 61, have worked during the past three months to modernise and adapt the classic fairy tale for the ice.

Director Ashleigh Black said the show had "come together quite quickly", the first practice having been held last month.

She and co-director Lisa Stevens chose the fairy tale because it was a favourite story from their childhood.

It had been challenging organising more than 170 skaters and many more helpers, but they were both looking forward to performing at the weekend.

Audiences could expect amazing skating, cameo appearances and a few laughs, Miss Black said.

Show times are Saturday at 4pm and Sunday at 1pm and 5pm.
