No respite from summer crime spree

The holiday season crime spree continues in Dunedin.

A series of incidents were reported during the first few days of 2016, including a home invasion in Northeast Valley and the theft of cash and Australian passports from a car parked at a private house in Maori Hill.

Also, about 20 cars had been broken into in the past week, police said.

The spree was showed no sign of abating and several thefts were reported to police yesterday, Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said.

A car, two laptops and a TV were taken from a Victoria Rd property between December 29 and June 6.

Keys for another vehicle were also taken from the property.

A $2000 heirloom pendant and $800 in cash were stolen from a car parked in a garage in Puketai St, Andersons Bay, on June 5 or 6.

During the same period, a wallet containing $150 cash and several cards was taken from a car in Henry St, Maori Hill, and a Castle St property was entered in North Dunedin.

It was not clear if anything had been stolen from the Castle St property, as the occupant was away, Sgt Aitken said.

Senior Sergeant Gavin Briggs said police were following positive lines of inquiry in tracking down a man who stole a box containing cycling shoes from a Willowbank St property between December 31 and January 5 and returned them for cash at Cycle World Dunedin.

Police are also seeking information on two burnt out cars discovered in Dunedin early on Sunday.

One car was found burnt out at Unity Park about 2.30am and another in Logan Park Dr about 4.15am.
