There was a triple live album of the Woodstock festival featuring naked hippies on the back cover, a 1974 edition of War Monthly magazine, and a used wooden spice rack on offer at the Anything But Books Sale in Dunedin yesterday.

The Regent Theatre's other fundraiser, a spin-off from the 24-hour Book Sale, was stocked with some strange stuff, but that did not stop hundreds lining up to stream through the doors when they opened at 2pm.

Finding a browsing space at the vinyl and CD music tables proved difficult.

Regent Theatre Trust chairwoman Alison Cunningham said the Anything But Books Sale began as ''a table with all the odds and sods on it'' at the book sale, and then became an event on its own.

The sale had ''a really, really busy start'', vindicating a decision to begin at 2pm, rather than 3pm, as had been done in the past.

It had remained steady as the afternoon wore on.

The trust hoped to raise more than $50,000 from the sales this year.

The money would be used for capital acquisitions, for instance new sound gear - ''buying the things that the theatre needs''.
