Earlier this week, Mr Cormick was appointed principal of the school created by the merger of Forbury and Macandrew. The decision was not popular with parents from Forbury School.
However, rather than shake his confidence, the meeting had stirred his resolve, he said.
"In fact, it's given me more determination to support the board to realise their vision of creating a new creative and innovative school."
Board of trustees chairwoman Joy Clark yesterday announced the new school, to be situated on the Macandrew Intermediate site, would be called Bathgate Park School.
Mr Cormick said it was an opportunity to start afresh and create a new atmosphere in the school.
"This establishing board has decided their vision is to create a school with a strong focus on the arts and technology.
"We are well placed to be able to meet that vision. Both Macandrew and Forbury have strong backgrounds in these areas - particularly the arts."
Mr Cormick said he also wanted to establish an environment in which the community would be actively involved in creating the new school.
"It's going to take time before the community develops a sense of ownership of the school and embed themselves in the new environment."
Mr Cormick said he had the skills, attributes, experience and the energy to help the board achieve its goals.
There had been a lot of interest from parents of pupils at other schools in Dunedin wanting to come to the new school, and he was now looking forward to the year ahead.
Mrs Clark said the process of appointing teachers was now under way, and the successful candidates would be named within the next two weeks.
