An internet trader has apologised for marketing products deemed offensive by the man who coined "Nek Minnit".

Former Dunedin skateboarder Levi Hawken told the Otago Daily Times he was appalled to find his image and catchphrase featuring on mouse pads, earrings and school pads for sale on an online auction site.

The products also feature the phrase "Didn't brush my teeth for 20 years. Nek Minnit".

This offended Mr Hawken, who has ectodermal dysplasias conditions, which affect his teeth and hair.

"I thought that was rude."

Claims he had been contacted by the Timaru-based seller, Dave Collie, for permission to use his image and catchphrase were not true, he said.

"There was no message [from him] - as if I would let him do that anyway ... put a picture of me with something rude written on it."

Mr Collie confirmed he had withdrawn the products and said he had "tried to contact [Mr Hawken] to offer a percentage of what we got".

"As soon as he said he didn't know about them, I withdrew them."

He also apologised for using an ODT photograph without permission on the products, which had not attracted any buyers before being removed from sale yesterday.

"I didn't mean to cause offence."

Mr Hawken said he was always finding new products using variations of "Nek Minnit" and was in the process of trademarking his phrase.

His 9sec "Nek Minnit" clip has been a hit on YouTube and spawned dozens of parodies.

Since the clip - where he says "left my scooter outside the dairy ... nek minnit" before showing a broken scooter at a Fairfield skateboard park - went viral, Mr Hawken has been living in Auckland.
