A mum watched in horror as the car carrying her husband and infant son was wrecked when it collided with another car and hit a power pole in Dunedin yesterday.

St Kilda Station officer Kate Hill said the woman was travelling in a car behind the car carrying her husband and 3-year-old son when it collided with another car at the intersection of Blackhead and Tunnel Beach Rds about 11am.

''A collision between two cars caused one to go down into a paddock and the other one to hit a power pole.''

The woman was shaken, she said.

"Seeing it happen is enough to give any parent heart failure.''

Both cars were extensively damaged but nobody was trapped when fire crews arrived, she said.

''We didn't have to cut anything up.''

The people from the crashed cars were showing signs of shock, she said.

The father and son were put in the fire engine to shelter them from the wind.

A Lookout Point crew looked after the three people whose car had travelled down a bank ''a good 50 metres'' into a cow paddock, until ambulance staff arrived.''

They had been involved in a substantial collision and they were lucky with the injuries they did have - it could have been an awful lot worse.''

A St John spokeswoman said two people with minor injuries were transported to Dunedin Hospital for assessment.

Both cars in the crash were badly damaged. Sergeant Ben Butterfield, of Dunedin, said it was too early to know if charges would be laid.
