A composer who kicked off his theatre career in Dunedin as a student has been twice honoured at an esteemed British award ceremony.

Darren Clark, a University of Otago graduate from Wellington, was announced the winner of two Olivier Awards - Best New Musical and Outstanding Musical Contribution - for his work on the musical The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

The latter was jointly awarded to him and collaborator Mark Aspinall, and the musical itself also won Best Actor in a Musical.

The 2025 awards, named after actor Sir Laurence Olivier, were presented by the Society of London Theatre at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday. They are widely considered the highest honour in British theatre.

Mr Clark became heavily involved in the musical theatre scene when he came to Dunedin in the early 2000s to study classics at the University of Otago, performing in more than 15 musicals.

He would go on to write more than 40 shows over the past 17 years, after quitting his day job to pursue music fulltime.

Mr Clark said he was "humbled and honoured" to have been nominated.
