Dunedin police have praised the considerate behaviour of drivers around schools as pupils head back to school for the fourth term.

Acting Sergeant Anthony Bond, of the strategic traffic unit, said no tickets were issued in the city yesterday for speeding or dangerous driving near schools, and he was pleased drivers were starting to take more care.

"The highest speed clocked was 52kmh.

"That's great.

"People are learning. It's taken a while," he said.

Sgt Bond said drivers had been given traffic infringement notices in the past for travelling at speeds up to 80kmh past schools.

"Thank God those days are over - and long may it continue."

Speed checks around schools in the city will continue for the remainder of this week, he said.
