The week-long challenge began yesterday and while it is primarily a battle to find the top maths pupil, class and school in the country, Challenge co-ordinator Yvonne Blanch said it was also a wonderful opportunity for pupils to have fun, improve their maths and help their schools to reassess pupils' maths skills.
"About 100,000 students from 1000 schools are taking part in the contest where students pit their maths skills against questions from across the maths curriculum."
The Challenge is run through online learning platform Mathletics - the award-winning educational programme which is used regularly by 60,000 New Zealand pupils to support classroom learning.
Last year's winning school was Rotorua Intermediate.
Twenty-four schools in Dunedin are vying for the honour this year.
