Manager made redundant

A Dunedin manager of the anti-violence organisation Stopping Violence Dunedin has been made redundant after a review.

Board member Brett Gray said operation manager Paul Martin's full-time position was disestablished last month.

Polson Higgs business advisers reviewed the structure and costs of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) when Government funding ''dried up'', Mr Gray said.

''It was decided we had to restructure and Paul's job was disestablished.''

Ideally, the board would continue employing Mr Martin but could not afford to, he said.

The review showed contractors would need to be used more and the four part-time staff at the non-profit organisation would pick up some of the workload.

''A lot of people now, as a result of Paul going, are doing a lot more work for no more pay. This is really common across the NGO sector - people doing the job of two people for the same pay.''

Community funding from charitable trusts was harder to obtain, he said.

The Family Court and Probation Services used the organisation's services, but referrals and funding from the Ministry of Justice had decreased, he said.

NGOs would need to be smarter, more efficient and more results-focused, he said.

Mr Martin said he had been seeking work since being made redundant.
