A 19-year-old man has been charged after a high-speed pursuit in Dunedin on Saturday night.
The man failed to stop for police after he was seen at 11.20pm driving a Honda Prelude at an estimated 100kmh on Warrender St, a 50kmh zone, Acting Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield, of the Southern district command centre, said.
That prompted a high-speed chase, which police abandoned only a short time later, Acting Snr Sgt Butterfield said.
It was not known how fast the driver was travelling when police abandoned the chase.
Police later found the Honda Prelude abandoned near Moana Pool,
in Littlebourne Rd, and a couple of hours later tracked the alleged driver to a South Dunedin property.
Acting Snr Sgt Butterfield said it was disappointing drivers were continuing to flee from police.
''The simple message from us would be to just stop. There is no point putting yourself or other people's lives at risk for a simple matter like this.''
The man is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday on charges of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.
