Man caught with others’ belongings in custody

A man is in custody after police arrested him with a dozen bank cards, mail, keys, bags and clothing that did not belong to him.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to Balaclava and Kenmure areas yesterday after members of the public noticed a man acting suspiciously.

Police discovered the 31-year-old man had allegedly been taking mail from letter boxes, trying car door handles and breaking into vehicles in the area.

The man was arrested and, when he was searched, police found bank cards, letters from various addresses, keys, clothing that did not belong to him and several wallets, handbags and purses, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The man appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on three charges of interfering with a vehicle and one of taking a credit card for a pecuniary advantage.

He was remanded in custody by Judge Jim Large without entering pleas and will reappear in court later this month.

The defendant also faces another dishonesty charge in relation to a vehicle.
