But that is just what a 21-year-old man attempted after the Otago v Southland match at Carisbrook on Saturday.
He was one of many fans who raced on to the pitch after the game to celebrate the last provincial rugby match at Carisbrook, but he was the only one to try to tackle one of the biggest players on the paddock.
Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross said the man spent a couple of hours in the Dunedin Central Police Station cells before being released with a pre-charge warning for disorderly behaviour.
Otago team manager Hugh Tait said fortunately the only thing that was hurt was the young man's pride.
"He made a fool of himself and now he's paying the penalty.
"Tom wasn't worried about the incident and he's decided not to press charges."
