This week, for the first time in more than two decades, the New Zealand Machine Knitters' Society has come to Otago.
Machine knitting aficionados from throughout the country will descend on the Holy Cross Convention Centre in Mosgiel for the society's annual festival.
Festival secretary Alma Blaikie (75) said there were ''90-odd'' people registered as coming.
The festival would consist of machine knitting displays, workshops, and seminars.
There would also be a competition with a variety of different prizes, including the Shepherd Trophy for the best machine knitting entry.
The festival had received 120 entries from 37 different people, Ms Blaikie said.
''We'll be doing it from my house - the judging - and then we'll go down to the centre on Monday or Tuesday [with the wares].''
Four judges from the North and South Island would dole out the prizes.
The festival would conclude on Thursday night, with a gala, fashion parade and ''make-and-model'' event, at which people would model their own creations.
