A 5-month old baby was checked for injuries, and a car badly damaged, following a "ludicrous" decision by a boy who rolled a rock on to the Southern Motorway in Dunedin.
Police are appealing for any information about a boy, aged about 10, who was seen pushing the 15cm-diameter rock through the barrier near the speed camera, shortly before the car hit the rock.
The boy was described as a Caucasian, wearing a yellow or orange top and green pants. He may have been on the overbridge near the speed-camera area with another boy before the incident.
Emergency services were called to the motorway near Burnside, after a northbound Honda Integra drove into the rock shortly after 4pm on Thursday, Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross said.
"It is such a ludicrous thing to do, and it potentially had disastrous consequences," Snr Sgt Ross said.
An occupant of the car, a 5-month old baby, was checked by St John ambulance staff after hitting its head during the incident. The car was badly damaged, with oil leaking on to the motorway, posing athreat to motorists, Snr Sgt Ross said.
