Mr Takens had bought the laser to cheer up Mrs Takens after her cat died.
It was not the cost of replacing the display that angered him, rather it was the brazenness of the theft.
''My wife is disabled and I thought I would do something to cheer her up and then someone has come along and just taken it straight out of the front yard.''
Mr Takens said he thought of going to the police to report the theft but decided against it because he thought nothing would come of it.
The theft of other outdoor Christmas lights in Mosgiel on Tuesday night have been reported on social media.
