Apparently, these six white Maltese pooches are better behaved than children - except when you leave them unattended.

Whenever Oxford couple Rose and Bruce Anderson take their campervan on holiday, the dogs come too.

They've been all over New Zealand - from the far north to as far south as Balclutha.

And although they look like cats wouldn't melt in their mouths, they are just like children and do get bored easily, Mrs Anderson said.

Recently, the Andersons found their little gems creating a cacophony and confusion during an interisland ferry crossing.

They had left the dogs inside their campervan and headed upstairs to the decks to enjoy a peaceful journey.

Meanwhile, ferry security staff were becoming increasingly frustrated by the sound of a horn tooting intermittently on the vehicle deck, with no sign of the cause.

When the Andersons returned to the campervan as the ferry arrived in Wellington, they found Poppy happily passing the time by bouncing up and down on the horn.

"We never leave the campervan without detaching the battery now," Mrs Anderson said.

The couple have also found it was a bad idea to leave toilet rolls lying around as the dogs love to tear them to shreds, making a terrible mess.

"Some people say we're barking mad to have six dogs," Mrs Anderson said.

Despite their attention-seeking antics, the Andersons say they are relatively low-maintenance dogs and they couldn't imagine life without them.

"They're very affectionate and they love being around people.

"They don't shed their coats and they don't smell.

They don't like the cold, so they all sleep on our bed.

"And it's not such a mission to follow them around with a pooper scooper in the morning.

They do it on cue for us.

"The dogs are better behaved than most children."

The Andersons were in Dunedin yesterday with their campervan full of dogs, on a short jaunt to see some of the city's landmarks.

Eventually, they hope to go further south to visit Bluff and Stewart Island, so they can say they've taken the dogs from the cape to the bluff.
