Hayward’s Auction House co-owner and auctioneer John More, of Dunedin, holds a mysterious item which goes on sale in a vintage, antique and collectable auction at 10am tomorrow.

Is it a bird, or is it a plane?

It is neither, but it is wooden, reddish-coloured, 2m high and listed as a "hanging wooden spire".

"We are still scratching our heads about what the object is," Mr More said yesterday.

The item, recently obtained from a Waikouaiti resident, was bought at Abbotsford Farm, Taieri, about 10 years ago, and was apparently found in a grain storage area, he said.
