On most lunch breaks, you can find Jayden Jesudhass sitting in George Street Normal School's playground with a guitar, surrounded by friends singing popular tunes.

But on November 29, the 9-year-old will be providing more formal entertainment in the school hall, with a two-hour concert to raise funds for his trip back to Tamworth, Australia, where he hopes to retain his Battle of the Young Star junior section title at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Jayden said he needed to raise about $5000 for the trip, and had already raised about half that amount busking on the streets of Dunedin.

He hoped to raise the remainder during his concert at school, which will feature him, the school's kapa haka group, the school band, the Rock 'n' Roll Junior Dancers and some of his friends, who will also sing songs.

''I'm really excited about the show. I love being on stage. I'd give the experience an 11 out of 10.''

Jayden started singing when he was 3 and began playing guitar when he was 5.

Since then, he has won awards including the under-14 Freeze Ya Bits Off busking competition at the 2011 New Zealand Gold Guitar awards in Gore, and he was also runner-up in the juvenile male vocal category at the Capital Country Music Association competition in Tamworth.

Jayden said he was looking forward to returning to Tamworth to defend his title.

The 2014 Tamworth Country Music Festival begins on January 17.
