'It's a horrible motive, whatever it is': Police

Three women in North Dunedin flats woke to a man standing over their beds on Sunday, prompting a warning about flat security.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said at 4.30am in a Warrender St flat, a female student woke to find a man standing over her.

In the same flat on the same night, another women woke to a man sitting at the end of her bed.

A women in a neighbouring flat reported the same thing happening earlier the same night at 3.30am.

Both of the flats were all-female.

The man had not been located but was described as a Caucasian male in his mid-20s, who was clean shaven and had very short hair.

No further description of the man was available.

Snr Sgt Dinnissen warned students to lock their doors and call 111 as soon as something like this happened.

"Flat security is a big thing.

"If you're in a flat you should be waking your flatmates up, make some noise."

He said police would be increasing their presence in the area as a result.

"It's a horrible motive, whatever it is."
