Those with an interest in Maori land are urged to attend a hui in Dunedin tomorrow to discuss new legislation, including how it may increase the productivity of their land.
Te Ture Whenua Iwi leaders group technical team will be in Dunedin tomorrow to discuss the potential effect of the Te Ture Whenua Maori Bill.
The Bill proposes to reform the 1993 Act, including making it possible to make decisions without the involvement of the Maori Land Court and providing collective ownership options.
There are more than 27,137 blocks of Maori land governed by the Act, comprising 1.42 million hectares, or about 5% of the total land in New Zealand.
In the South Island, 65,951ha are in Maori freehold land titles, with 21,741ha not vested.
The government study estimated up to 80% of Maori land was undeperforming for its owners.
