Hope plain will dry out

Last week's rain has left the Taieri Plain saturated but, with little rain forecast in coming days, it is hoped the area will dry out before the next storm.

About two months' rain fell on the plain in a few days, raising river levels and causing surface flooding.

Otago Regional Council environmental information and science director John Threlfall said the rain stopped just before major flooding occurred.

"Everything is saturated, but we're hoping it will dry out quickly."

The Taieri River was still high but was expected to continue dropping, as were other rivers and streams around the district.

For most farmers, the storm would have been welcome, boosting soil moisture levels around the district, he said.

The system of pumps and flood works on the Taieri worked as they should, he said.

Federated Farmers Otago president Mike Lord said for most farmers the heavy rain was good as it would promote grass growth and made soil easier to work.

It was surprising how quickly the rivers rose with the rain and then dropped afterwards, he said.

"It was at the high end - it couldn't have taken much more."

Most farmers were now hoping for more sunlight so as to take advantage of the added moisture, he said.

"If that happens, we'll be quite well set up.'
