Former Labour Cabinet minister Pete Hodgson has stepped down from two government-appointed roles - the chairmanship of Callaghan Innovation and a contract with Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand helping oversee the construction of the new Dunedin hospital.

Although Mr Hodgson’s retirement from those roles was not entirely unexpected given the change of government, he is also 73 and said he was at a stage of life where he wanted to focus more on his still extensive range of voluntary work, including being on the board of University of Otago-owned company Otago Innovation.

Mr Hodgson’s term at Callaghan Innovation was due to end early next year but his resignation, advised to Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Judith Collins, was effective immediately.

"I wish this important and competent organisation every success," he said.

Mr Hodgson’s contract with the hospital project also ends immediately.

"If local interests wish it of me, I will maintain involvement with the new hospital project such as continuing to chair the Local Advisory Group, but on a limited and voluntary basis," he said.
