While it may not have been as large as others around the country, Dunedin's Waitangi Day celebrations were still all about bringing different cultures together.

The 178th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi was commemorated in the city with a cultural festival in the Octagon.

Despite showers, about 100 people turned out to celebrate New Zealand's national day.

The event was a collaboration between Dunedin's Arai Te Uru marae and the Dunedin City Council.

A hangi was also prepared by the marae.

Marae chairwoman Tania Sharee Williams said the celebrations were about bringing different cultures together.

''Many different cultures have experienced the beautiful hangi today and, of course, the beautiful culture which we had on display.''

The group had sold or given out more than 100 hangi meals, many to cruise ship visitors, Ms Williams said.

Ngai Tahu's main Waitangi Day events were at the Te Rau Aroha marae in Bluff.
