Are you looking for something new to light up your life?

The new traffic lights at the intersection of Kitchener and Wharf Sts will be fully operational next Tuesday.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said they were designed to improve road safety, particularly for heavy traffic turning in and out of Kitchener St, as well as for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

"Testing of the lights is being carried out this week and any necessary adjustments will be made before the ‘go live’ date.

"Appropriate traffic management and signs alerting motorists to the new layout will be in place before the signals are turned on."

He said the installation was the final phase of stage 1 of the harbour arterial project. Stages 2 and 3 are now being publicly consulted on.

The project aims to provide a safe and efficient alternative route for traffic to bypass the central city and help ease congestion when construction of the new hospital begins.
