Life in Wakari has even more ups and downs than usual, following the opening of the Dunedin City Council’s modular pump track.

Work began on the track and its off-street parking at the Mayfield Ave playground, next to Wakari School, in December last year.

Cr Marie Laufiso said the low-maintenance, all-weather modular track was similar to pump tracks installed at Marlow Park and Waikouaiti School.

‘‘We hope the city’s tamariki and rakatahi who are bikers and scooter riders will really enjoy the pump track, an exciting addition to the Wakari neighbourhood.

‘‘The pump track is the culmination of the hard work of many people, including our staff and various contractors who have worked on the project.’’

She thanked the community and Wakari School staff for their ‘‘input and enthusiasm’’ in discussing options for the site.

It was part of the DCC’s Play Space Plan, adopted in 2021, which identified the need for more challenging play areas for children aged between 10 and 14.

Elements of the project included the modular track components, artificial turf, paving and fencing, earthworks and drainage, as well as the parking area comprising 12 standard carparks and one fully accessible carpark.
