The Wiggles now have fans spanning two generations, some of the first children to watch them, back in 1991, now having children of their own who are fans.
The group was in Dunedin yesterday as part of its Wiggle Town tour of New Zealand, North America and Australia to celebrate the 25-year milestone and support its latest CD and DVD, Wiggle Town!
Eleven of their 14 shows in New Zealand have sold out, including yesterday's show at the Regent Theatre in Dunedin.
Theatre marketing manager Hannah Molloy said the tickets sold like hot potatoes, which did not happen often in Dunedin.
"Dunedin has that reputation for buying tickets at the last minute, but we were down to the last 30 tickets for the Wiggles with a week to go.''
She believed the popularity of the show was driven by the fact there were now two generations of people wanting to watch.
"I think there are probably lots of parents with kids who are just hitting that right age, who remember their own delight in the show.
"It's amazing, that cross-generational pleasure. While the kids are having a ball, the parents are reminiscing and singing along, as well.''
Wiggles founding member Anthony Field (Blue Wiggle), Emma Watkins (Yellow Wiggle), Simon Pryce (Red Wiggle) and Lachlan Gillespie (Purple Wiggle), were joined on stage by Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog and Henry the Octopus.
They performed their classics Hot Potato, Rock a Bye Your Bear and Fruit Salad, as well as their latest hits Do the Propeller, Emma's Yellow Bow and Simon Says.
The Wiggle Town tour follows the runaway success of last year, when the group performed more than 200 shows to more than 250,000 fans around the world, making The Wiggles the most successful children's entertainment group.
