In tough economic times, Forbury School in Dunedin would be among those noticing the financial strain on families.

So, the school has teamed up with student chefs at the Otago Polytechnic to teach pupils how to cook simple, tasty, nutritious and low budget meals for themselves and their families.

During the past six weeks, year 1-6 pupils at the school have been working with the trainee chefs to create culinary delights ranging from muffins, scones and muesli slices to pizza, soup, pasta and baked potatoes, principal Janice Tofia said.

"It helps them to become a little more independent and prepare food that is still tasty and nourishing, and meets the family budget.

"Because the kids are making it all themselves, they are finding the food always tastes better. They take huge pride in what they've made."

The pupils spent much of yesterday morning in the school's kitchen recreating some of the tasty treats they had been taught to prepare for a school dinner - Kai Time.

Pupils and their parents were invited to dine in the school hall and, seeing as the pupils had done all the hard work in the kitchen, their teachers and Otago Polytechnic trainee chefs served the food to them, Mrs Tofia said.
