Firefighters attack a vegetation fire near Waihola yesterday afternoon.

The fire started about 3pm and covered an area about 100m by 50m, spreading up a hill, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesman said. A helicopter was called in.

Firefighters also had to deal with a scrub fire in a gully near Hindon, from about 3.40pm. The helicopter also headed there.

Both fires were put out.

Meanwhile, a wildfire in north Canterbury was continuing to spread yesterday afternoon, fanned by strong winds.

Fenz said five helicopters were being used to battle the blaze, which had been burning since Thursday night in a forestry block north of Waipara.

Firefighters had managed to contain the fire, which has burnt through more than 100 hectares, yesterday morning before winds picked up.

"High, gusty winds have caused multiple break-out fires this afternoon," Fenz said in a statement yesterday afternoon.

"The fire has jumped the containment line and is now not contained and not controlled.

"We are putting all our resources into bringing the fire under control, including five helicopters responding."
