Fire crews from St Kilda, Lookout Point, Willowbank and Dunedin Central Fire Stations all attended the blaze in Culling St.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Lyn Crosson said initially only two crews were called to the fire at 7.50pm but more crews were requested.
When firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting from the roof cavity but it was not ``well involved'' so the fire was quickly brought under control, she said.
A fire safety officer visited the site last night to determine the cause of the fire.
