Excavation for Ryman Healthcare's rest-home in Highgate, Dunedin, is expected to start before Christmas.
Ryman chief executive Simon Challies yesterday confirmed no Environment Court appeals had followed resource consent being granted earlier this month.
Ryman gained consent for a single three-storey building with 30 ensuite rooms in a dementia-care facility on the ground floor, a rest-home on level one with 60 ensuite rooms, and 32 assisted-living suites on level two.
The consent follows a failed attempt in 2006, and an unsuccessful Environment Court appeal in 2007, after residents objected to the size and scale for the building.
Mr Challies said the company was arranging building consents for the new design with the Dunedin City Council.
The excavation was hoped to be done during school holidays, so the activity would not affect nearby schools.
The building would take at least 12 months, and the rest-home was expected to open early in 2011.
The company was in the process of hiring a project manager, Mr Challies said.
