Electric buses will run between Mosgiel and Dunedin next year as part of a revamped public transport service.

A flexible, on-demand electric service will also replace a fixed loop in Mosgiel.

Thirteen new electric buses would be brought in by Go Bus, the Otago Regional Council said in a statement yesterday.

Services to Mosgiel, Green Island, Brighton and Abbotsford were expanding from mid-2025, the council said.

The new fleet would include six larger buses capable of carrying up to 75 passengers each at peak times.

This operation would be carbon neutral, the council said.

The existing loop service had a bus circulating Mosgiel every 40 minutes on weekdays.

Mosgiel loop passengers could instead use an app or phone to catch a bus, the council said.

Cr Andrew Noone said a wheelchair-accessible on-demand service would expand public transport coverage, providing flexible routes.

"Although it will not be a door-to-door service, it will be more targeted to user needs than the loop service and won’t be taking unnecessary trips," he said.

Most of Dunedin’s commuter traffic comes in from the southwest.

The changes affect one of the most popular and longer-distance public transport routes in Dunedin.

They are due to come in from July.
