A Dunedin choir celebrating 25 years still sounds as youthful as ever.

The Dunedin Star Singers sang to a capacity Hanover Hall audience for their silver jubilee celebration yesterday.

A spokeswoman said the choir of about 30 members from all over Dunedin and Mosgiel met on Tuesday nights.

She said for conductor Rosemary Tarbotton, managing the choir was like "herding cats".

It had women of all ages and was often commended for its "youthful sound".

"We had a past director come and conduct one of the numbers today and she said we’ve still got that youthful sound which we’re proud of."

Four members had sung for all 25 years and one of them sang for the final time with it yesterday.

The spokeswoman said she remembered singing in a barbershop unaccompanied style with the Sweet Adelines before beginning the Star Singers. She said she had to get used to singing with accompaniment.

"Every year we kept trodding along and all of a sudden we got to 25."

Yesterday, the choir sang a range of songs, from music by New Zealand composers to American folk song Shenandoah, a choir favourite.
