From Dunedin to NZ Fashion Week

New Zealand Fashion Week will expose a young Dunedin designer's garments to an international audience.

Georgie Veitch (22) is one of three Westpac Young Designer Competition finalists selected to attend the largest annual fashion show in the country.

She received the good news this week and will travel to Auckland next Thursday ahead of the Friday evening runway show.

Miss Veitch's selection came as an early birthday present - she turns 23 today.

''It's quite overwhelming,'' she said.

The former Otago Girls' High School pupil, now living in Wellington, was chosen by fashion week judges as one of 10 finalists earlier this month, and was one of three to receive the most public votes since to go to fashion week.

Others chosen to show their creations in Auckland are Zoey Radford-Scott and Matt Hickmott, both of Wellington.

Judges will select and announce a winner on the evening of the runway show.

The winner will get $5000 cash, mentoring from a leading New Zealand fashion designer for one year and business banking advice from Westpac.

Miss Veitch, who studied fashion design at Massey University, said it was difficult competing against fellow graduates and friends.

''We are all so close, and it was quite difficult being up against one another. We are all supportive of each other and it will be great to go to Auckland with the others,'' she said.
