Matakaua (Karl) Ngaruaine Rouvi appeared for sentence at the High Court in Dunedin today.

Rouvi fatally stabbed Moana Anahera Marie Aranui in front of their three-year-old daughter on January 26 this year when Miss Aranui went to their house the day after she told him she was leaving him.

Miss Aranui received 21 wounds in all, six of them deep stab wounds, as Rouvi chased her around their Bayview Rd rental home.

When he had finished he stabbed himself in the chest five times. Miss Aranui died in a carport where she had sought shelter about 70m from the house.

Rouvi pleaded guilty to a murder charge earlier this year.
