Hayden George McKenzie (23), of Dunedin, was riding the motorcycle at the time of yesterday's crash, which occurred on Harvey St, Waitati, about 3.50pm, police said.
He was found dead by emergency services arriving at the scene of yesterday's crash, and was believed to have died instantly, Senior Sergeant Chris George, of Dunedin, said.
His pillion passenger - who has not been named - received minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital.
The ute driver was believed not to be injured.
The crash occurred when the 1000cc motorcycle the pair were travelling on failed to take a moderate left-hand corner, slid across the centre line and into the path of an oncoming Toyota flat deck utility, Snr Sgt George said.
The dead man's next of kin had also been informed, and victim support volunteers were working with family and friends of those involved in the crash.
A stretch of Harvey St was closed for several hours while the crash scene was examined and cleared, Snr Sgt George said.
Firefighters from Waitati and Willowbank stations attended the scene, as did St John ambulance staff and police from Port Chalmers, North Dunedin and Dunedin Central stations, and a police serious crash investigator from Alexandra.
